Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
