Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using these drugs need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
