No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in national projects. They were built at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
